The Actually Education concept came to me in March 2021. The idea has continued to grow and develop in the months since. Everyone I have spoken to about the project has said how much the resources we will provide are needed.
My initial motivation came from personal experience of mental health and neurodivergent conditions. I have lived with depression for over a decade and anxiety of some form since childhood. I know how these conditions are impacted by the education system, amongst my children and their friends, and more recently from online communities of parents, educators and consultants.
Last year I wanted to be a change-maker in mental health. I wanted to help my children and their peers as I witnessed first-hand the lack of resources and knowledge to deal with mental health and neurological conditions in children in the education system. But I didn’t know how I could achieve that!
In March 2021, after working in the EdTech sector and realising the potential of online resources to impact children, schools and parents, I drew on trusted contacts and personal recommendations to establish a project team and a Director group to help realise my vision. Collaboration has been essential from the start and will continue to be a driving force behind Actually Education.
We thought long and hard about our purpose, vision and core values. Please check these out on our home page. These will inform all our work as we develop the concept to reality – to create an online platform containing resources targeted for each of the sub-groups of our community that will enhance understanding and knowledge of mental health and neurodiversity to drive meaningful change.
